Kindle Oasis: Cutting Edge Design

Amazon added a new member to its Kindle E-book Reader family. It is called Kindle Oasis and it is super futuristic!

So how cool is this Oasis? It has the thinnest body among its sisters, 0.33" at the thickest and 0.13" at the thinnest! But why the varying thickness? They said it is to simulate the thickness of book spine and shift the center of gravity to the handgrip part, so it can be held in one hand comfortably.

The ergonomic design doesn't stop there. On the handgrip side, where your thumb can comfortably reach, they added new page turn button to make turning pages easier. The asymmetrical design works with both left and right handed person, you just need to rotate the device to switch hand.

Even though it has the same screen resolution (300 ppi) and size (6") as its predecessors, they added more LEDs. Now it has 10 LEDs to spread the screen light consistently.

Another cool thing is the battery. The Oasis comes with cover that also acts as a powerbank (or on their term, "charging cover"). So basically you have 2 batteries that they claimed to be able to last months from a single charge. The cover is beautiful though, made of leather with color choice of black, merlot, and walnut.

E-Book Reader vs Tablet

Let's talk about one of the hardest decision to make: what device you should buy to read e-books. It might be obvious for some people, but you might need to read these considerations:

Utility

If you are looking for a device to do a lot of things that you can do with your smartphone, but with better clarity and power, you might want to consider buying tablet. Tablets nowadays are as powerful as laptops but with better portability. Tablets such as Microsoft Surface or iPad Pro are now replacing laptops as daily computer.

Battery Life

This is where dedicated e-book reader such as Kindle shines. While regular tablets need daily recharge, Kindle can last days or weeks with a single 4-hours charging time. It has no need to use too much power anyway. It doesn't have apps that run in the background, leeching battery power.

Visual

Even though tablets have impressive screen resolutions to display vibrant colors, they are not designed to be comfortable on long reading sessions. Kindle, however, designed with specialized screen that mimics paper.

Personal or Family Use

Modern devices of both types usually have user control feature where you can restrict what other users can or cannot access. So as long as you are willing to do a bit of setup, your children are safe from inappropriate content.

So that's it, those are the things you should consider when deciding to buy your next e-book reader device. I hope that helps, see you next time!

Kindle for Kids Bundle

While some of us still enjoy that feeling of holding a book in our hands (including me), it is getting impractical to store all of our storybooks physically. Maybe it is time to venture to a more technologically advanced world of e-book.

While it is easy to store thousands of e-books in a laptop, it is still not the best way to enjoy them. It is unwieldy for a long reading session. Similarly, reading e-books using smartphone will result in squinting and/or struggling with the zoom level. However, tablets such as iPad is way too expensive to be handled by children. And they would open the games anyway, leaving the e-books unread.

Enter dedicated e-book reader from Amazon, Kindle. A 6" tablet that will deliver your whole library on the go. Its screen is optimized for reading that looks like paper, different than our regular device screens that make our eyes tired quickly. In addition, it can last several days or even weeks on a single charge, so you can bring it on a long trip without worrying about battery level.

So those all are the standard Kindle features, you might be wondering what the kids bundle is all about. In addition to Kindle device, you'll get:

  • Kid-friendly cover to guard against scratches and mild impact while also increasing the grip.
  • 2 years of accident protection by SquareTrade. It covers accidents such as knocked off a table, dropped in to water, chewed by a dog, or electrical and mechanical breakdowns.
Not only hardware bonuses, you will also get these features inside:

  • Safe environment designed for kids, even younger kids who cannot write yet can perform a search using pictures.
  • Achievements tracking, where you can track their reading progress and accomplishments.
  • Parental control to protect children from accessing inappropriate content.
  • Vocabulary builder, digital flashcards automatically generated from their word searches.
  • Built-in New Oxford American Dictionary.
  • Definitions of difficult words can automatically appear without breaking the reading pace.

You will get access to thousands of children books in Amazon and more than 11,000 libraries in the US (yes, you can borrow e-books from libraries).

Overall, a good gift for your children, right?
So go check that bundle on Amazon, and see you on the next post!
